QUESTION: Can you tour a Jamaica coffee plantation? My family is going there soon, and we’d like to catch a tour while we’re there. — Tricia H.

ANSWER: Blue Mountain is the most famous coffee plantation tour in Jamaica, with three tours to choose from: Express, Half Day, and Full Day. However, there are a couple of alternatives to Blue Mountain. We’ll give you all the details in this article.

Blue Mountain Coffee Plantation Tours

The Express Tour at Blue Mountain is an hour and a half long and focuses on the UCC Craighton Coffee Estate. Visitors get a historical tour and a sample of Blue Mountain’s coffee served alongside coffee cake. The tour begins with a light hike among the rows of coffee trees to a scenic gazebo with a stunning view of the mountains and the city of Kingston lying below. At the historic great house, where the tour ends, visitors can view antiques and purchase Blue Mountain coffee to take home. Reservations are required. Tours can be scheduled daily and leave from Kingston between eight a.m. and two p.m. Including travel time from Kingston and back, schedule three hours for your Blue Mountain Coffee Plantation Express Tour.

Cost: $25 for adults, $15 children under 12; Transport $100 for up to three guests with $25 each additional adult and $15 each additional child under 12. Bring $20 to $40 if you plan to purchase a half pound or pound of Blue Mountain coffee.

The Blue Mountain Coffee Plantation Half Day Tour begins with the Express Tour described above, and continues with the Lunch & Garden Tour at Belcour Lodge. Belcour Lodge creates hot sauces, jams, and preserves infused with honey from the apiary at Belcour. On the garden tour, you’ll see orchids, a citrus orchard, and other plants both native and exotic. Finally, you’re invited to cool off with a dip in the Mammee River, so bring a swimsuit and towel if you plan to swim. Reservations are required, and tours leave from Kingston daily between eight a.m. and noon. Including travel time from Kingston and back, schedule five hours for your Blue Mountain Coffee Plantation Half Day Tour.

Cost: $55 for adults, $35 for children under 12; Transport $150 for up to three guests with $35 each additional adult and $20 each additional child under 12. Bring spending money for Blue Mountain coffee and hot sauces, jams, preserves, or a cookbook at Belcour Lodge.

The Blue Mountain Coffee Plantation Full Day Tour proceeds through the Express tour and the Lunch & Garden Tour at Belcour Lodge described in the Half Day Tour section. After lunch, you’ll have the opportunity to swim in the Mammee River, so bring a swimsuit and towel if you plan to go for a dip. Next up is a 45-minute tour of the Mavis Bank Coffee Factory, the largest coffee processing plant in Jamaica. At the factory, coffee from more than 2,000 nearby farms is prepared, roasted, and exported. Reservations are required. Tours leave daily from Kingston between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Including travel time from Kingston and back, schedule eight hours for your Blue Mountain Coffee Plantation Full Day Tour.

Cost: $75 for adults, $50 for children under 12; Transport $200 for up to three adults with $50 each additional adult and $30 each additional child under 12. Bring spending money for Blue Mountain coffee and hot sauces, jams, preserves, or a cookbook at Belcour Lodge.
