On a recent trip to Austin, I ran into Austin Java by accident when I saw it as I drove past in while going down Menchaca Road. It looked interesting, so I went back the next day just to check it out.
Austin Java is more than just a coffee shop, as they also serve liquor and food. When I went inside at around 10 a.m. on a Friday, the restaurant area was 3/4 full with locals enjoying breakfast.
I did not have a meal and only ordered an Americano, a cafe au lait and a cappuccino to check out the coffee options.
The service was good and the woman who took my order was friendly and helpful when I asked her if I could have one of the drinks as a decaf.
I noticed that Austin Java has both a manual espresso machine as well as two super automatic commercial machines. At the time I visited, the employees were only using the super automatic, and that’s how they made my drinks.

If you enjoy the coffee at Austin Java, they will also sell you the beans to brew your own coffee at home.

If you want to make everyone happy at work or at some kind of event, you can also buy a 128 oz box of coffee to bring with you. This is much more convenient than trying to bring a big container with multiple cups. You simply bring the box and let people serve themselves and prepare the coffee the way they like it.

I ordered a cafe au lait, a decaf Americano and a cappuccino to try when I visited, and I loved them all. This might be my favorite Austin coffee, especially since it’s a real and authentic Austin shop and gives you all the great Austin vibes that make that city so fun to be in.
The Americano had chocolate notes and wasn’t too sour or fruity, with good body and mouthfeel. The cappuccino was prepared perfectly with good foam and good temperature, and it was also delicious. The cafe au lait was similarly delicious. Hot, milky, and tasty.
I wholeheartedly recommend Austin Java if you’re in this part of Austin, and I’d say it’s worth a 15 or 20 minute drive out of your way.
